Five Tips for Improving Your Online Presence - Workology

Five Tips for Improving Your Online Presence - Workology Here are five key tips to improve your online presence. Does your  online profile tell a purposeful and compelling story  about who you are and get you through the door of a prospective employer?  So many of my colleagues fill their profiles with facts, figures and accomplishments. This information is important, but not nearly as crucial as tying your pertinent tidbits to your career objectives; compelling someone to want to know more! How did you solve problems, make life more convenient or help customers save money? Some professionals hesitate to get onboard with social media because theyre worried about time constraints or conflicts with company policies. Having a weak online presence now marks you as out of touch. For example, a top executive I know has less than 200 contacts on LinkedIn- huh? I did a search on a potential keynote speaker, and came up empty. Your online presence is being assessed daily!  Today, whether you’re pursuing your next promotion or next customer, it’s not enough to work hard, do great job and hope you get noticed. My motto is, “Be deliberate and thoughtful” when communicating your personal brand online. Earlier this month, I attended the 2012 National Diversity Women’s Business Leadership Conference in Washington, DC. The conference was an inspirational experience; lifting my mind and spirit with incredible programming, speakers and networking. One of the highlights was attending a, “Visibility Mini Boot Camp” lead by Shaunice Hawkins, Founder CEO Evolutions Consulting. Her passion is helping others adapt to new realities, grow through transition and change, and evolve into greater versions of themselves. She advocates that your identity is multi-dimensional and that you need to focus on how you want to be perceived by others. I consider myself a fairly sophisticated online user but learned so much in her session. Shaunice provided a wealth of information and a refreshing perspective. Here are five key tips to improve your online presence. Before we start, I wanted to highly recommend Shaunice for your organization! Create an About Me Profile.  Do you have an About me profile? It’s a free service that lets you create a fully customizable one-page website that’s all about you and your interests. It’s more illustrative than a resume and allows you to use stories or case studies to build connections. Also, provide a link to your About me profile on all of your social sites. Join Youtube.  Have you posted any of your presentations on YouTube? Consider YouTube as  your own personal television broadcast channel. If you are an expert at something, this medium is perfect for getting that expertise out to the masses. Start Blogging.  Worried about now having enough to say? Take the plunge!  Blogging  is a great way to communicate your expertise, ideas, reflections, and commentary that you’re passionate about. You can also interview other thinkers you admire, or write about good work in your industry. (Like how I’m featuring Shaunice!) (I started posting on Blogging4jobs last January. It’s been a transformational step in my career. My writing skills have stretched and I’ve honed my ability to communicate succinctly. Blogging has built my credibility as a thought leader in collaboration, change management and organizational transformation. It has connected me with many diverse people and has opened so many doors â€" I would have never dreamt social media to be so powerful! It’s an honor to be part of the Blogging4Jobs writing team and I look forward to a thought provoking 2013!) Utilize Linkedin.  Is your LinkedIn profile up-to-date? Do you have a queue of invites that you haven’t accepted? Your LinkedIn profile highlights your expertise. It helps you build relationships, market your business, network with colleagues, post or find new jobs and expand your knowledge. Try to post a weekly message about your work, a conference you’re attending or public news about your company. After attending a meeting, “LinkIn” with those you met. I share links to relevant articles and engage in high-level discussion with colleagues. Also, ask colleagues for recommendations and/or endorsements to improve your brand. Tweet on Twitter!  Do you Tweet?  Twitter builds credibility  from an expertise standpoint and allows you to engage your followers through interesting content. Share 140- character expert tidbits about your work, cause, subject-matter expertise, business, etc. Add photos, links, videos, share musicanything that can broaden the experience for your followers and expand your personal brand narrative. Executing with excellence, delivering projects on time, assuming leadership roles, and communicating with simplicity are all critical buzz phrases that describe your work. The key is to tie your pieces into a compelling story reflecting your passion, purpose and capabilities that gain you entre to potential employers and clients. Remember my motto- “Be deliberate and thoughtful” in cultivating your online brand! How are you leveraging Your brand? How do you leverage your online presence to create an impressionable identity? What changes do you plan to make to convey your unique story? Have a wonderful New Year and I look forward to your comments in 2013!

At its center, an enlightening meeting is an easygoing discussion between an occupation searcher and someone who works at an organization they're keen on intended to assist them with social affair intel on what it resembles working at the organization and what openings they have accessible. Be that as it may, don't let the name fool you - instructive meetings can do considerably more for you than simply give you data. On the off chance that you do your best, an enlightening meeting can help get your foot in the entryway of the organization you have your eye on and in the end, may even assist you with getting a vocation . Intrigued, however don't have a clue where to begin? Influence this three-section technique. It's consistently decent in the event that you definitely know someone who works at the organization, yet on the off chance that you don't, connecting through email or internet based life is completely adequate. Profession Coach Angela Copeland suggests remembering the accompanying focuses when you first contact ask about an educational meeting: Need somewhat more assistance drafting your effort note? Copeland drafted a few layouts that you can use to base your message off of. On the off chance that you know or have just met the individual you wish to contact, have a go at something like this (with explicit names and subtleties refreshed by your circumstance, obviously): I trust you're having an incredible day! It was extraordinary seeing you a week ago at the local picnic. As you most likely are aware, I'm likewise a MBA graduate of Pepperdine University. I'm a major fanatic of the work you're doing at ServiceMaster, and I respect the exertion the organization is placing in around private company advancement inside our locale. I would cherish the chance to plunk down with you for only a couple of moments to study your profession, and about ServiceMaster. Is there a period next Thursday that may function admirably for you? I'm glad to go to your office or to meet some place close by - whichever is the most helpful for you. On the off chance that you haven't met the individual you're connecting with, attempt this (once more, refreshing names/subtleties as suitable): I trust you're having an extraordinary day! I'm writing to acquaint myself with you. I'm additionally a MBA graduate of Pepperdine University. I would cherish the chance to plunk down with you for only a couple of moments to study your profession, and about ServiceMaster. Is there a period next Thursday that may function admirably for you? I'm glad to go to your office or to meet some place close by - whichever is the most helpful for you. When you've really planned a gathering with somebody, be certain you benefit from your time, Copeland says. Research all that you can about the organization and the individual online ahead of time. A couple of she suggests asking specifically are: Make a point to remain occupied with what they're stating - this data will give you a smart thought of whether the organization is even a solid match for you. You may even need to take notes to reference later in the event that you choose to wind up applying. At long last, Copeland prompts that activity searchers stay away from regular violation of social norms like legitimately requesting a vocation, ruling the discussion with data about you, taking up a lot of their time, and anticipating that the individual should pay for their own lunch or espresso on the off chance that they are meeting you at an eatery. The truly difficult work is commonly over once you've just met with someone, yet catching up with them is vital to guaranteeing that your instructive meeting demonstrates productive. Sending a card to say thanks inside a day or so of your gathering is vital. As you would after a meeting with a selection representative, ensure your note offers thanks for your questioner's time, gratefulness for increasing more data and knowledge into the position and friends, and eagerness/enthusiasm for working at the organization. Now, getting some information about open jobs or suggestions is commonly proper. Notwithstanding, you need to ensure you go about it in the correct manner - except if the individual you talked with is a full-time scout, filling open occupations at the organization presumably isn't their essential concern. To show proactivity on your part and exhibit regard for their time, inquire about open jobs on the organization's profession site or Glassdoor page first to perceive what may be a solid match for you rather than basically inquiring as to whether they could reveal to you increasingly about open jobs. In your message, take a stab at saying something with the impact of I saw that your organization is right now employing for a Marketing Manager job. In the event that you consider I'd be a decent qualified for the position, I'd love on the off chance that you could place me in contact with or notice my name to a spotter! Regardless of whether your instructive meeting doesn't straightforwardly prompt a suggestion or referral , however, don't pressure - it doesn't mean you essentially did anything incorrectly. Similarly as with numerous aspects of occupation chasing, educational meetings can be a numbers game, where you need to go on a ton of them before anything solid comes out of it. The uplifting news? That sort of proactivity is actually what you should be effective in your quest for new employment - and with each enlightening meeting you go on, you're that a lot nearer to finding the position that accommodates your life.
